ABOUT ABOUT

Join us for an immersive exploration of beauty and vanity during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries!

The event begins with a captivating presentation in the Grundy Library's Snyder Room, delving into the cultural and societal influences shaping beauty standards of the era. Lasting approximately 30-40 minutes, this presentation sets the stage for a deeper understanding of the historical context.

Following the presentation, you'll be escorted to the Grundy Museum's South Lawn for refreshments. Amidst lively conversation, you'll await your turn to embark on a guided tour of the Museum's Walnut Grove Room, where a curated selection of exhibit items awaits. From garments and grooming tools to personal artifacts belonging to the Grundy Family, the exhibits offer tangible insights into the practices and pressures surrounding beauty during this time period.

After the tour, you'll explore the Museum's first-floor rooms, gaining further perspective on the intersection of beauty, society, and class. You'll be sure to have a newfound appreciation for the lengths to which individuals went to conform to societal ideals of beauty!

Our esteemed partners and presenters, including Robin Butrey, John Whitenight, Mary Ellyn Kunz, Stephanie Walker, Nick Rizzo, and dedicated volunteers, ensure a rich and informative experience for all attendees.

Who should attend? This event welcomes local regulars and extends outreach to diverse groups including art colleges, social history enthusiasts, and beauty schools. With a demographic ranging from younger students to the elderly, there's something for everyone to learn and enjoy!
